Executive Director
Looking back…
This last year was a very busy year. We offered 10 learning webinars, we welcomed 39 new member companies, conducted our second virtual annual general meeting, added new design and content changes to the newsletter, continued with advocacy efforts, and began conversations with new and old members by showcasing their companies in our member spotlight series.
In 2021 we added Jason Jackson as our Education Consultant, which compliments Kevin Wong our Technical Consultant to cover the key areas of focus for the CWQA.
Rob Woodland
CWQA President
Looking forward…
I’m Rob Woodland the current President of the Canadian Water Quality Association and very happy to be working for all of the members of the CWQA.
Shelley provided a look back at 2021, and I want to provide a look ahead. Many of you took the time to provide your feedback in the member satisfaction survey, and what stood out for me and the Board when we looked at the results is that we need to continue with education and to beef it up. Your education committee is going to do a full audit of what is offered currently, and where we can enhance it in the new year.
Member Spotlight
CWQA is spotlighting our members so that the public can see the great work they do and the years of experience and why it is the smart choice to choose a CWQA member.
EcoWater Systems Calgary & AquaSoft Service Calgary
Denise and Aaron Biffert embarked on a business adventure that neither of them had really expected. Aaron had a technical aptitude that brought him into the water industry in Alberta in 1988. He spent time with Aquafine, Petwa High Purity Water, Softy Installation, Mr. Softwater and a few other companies which ultimately lead him to the year 2000 where he and Denise, who left her career in childcare, to start their very own business – EcoWater Systems Calgary.
Pristine Water Solutions
One of the newest members of the Canadian Water Quality Association family is a true family operation. Pristine Water Solutions was conceived by Bill Marr, and developed by his family, Sebastian (son), David and Mason (sons-in-law). Officially incorporated in April of 2021 and opening in July of 2021, the business operates in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
Owning and running a family business is something that Bill had some experience with by working in his family wholesale distribution business for many years.

Nitrates in Drinking Water
Nitrates are compounds that occur naturally within the earth but are found in elevated levels in agricultural communities and rural towns. While they do not present any taste or odor, drinking elevated levels of nitrates can cause illness in both humans and in livestock.
WQP State of the Industry Report 2021
A look at 2021 trends & a look ahead in the water quality industry.
by Lauren Del Ciello, managing editor for WQP
Each fall, Water Quality Products (WQP) surveys its audience on important industry issues, ranging from business growth, market drivers, education and more. Most questions remain tried-and-true annually to provide a consistent benchmark, though in 2020 the WQP editorial team re-worked aspects of the survey to more accurately address current business trends, such as the increasing role of digital technology and the evolving impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
David Weatherill
1950 – 2021
In Memoriam
Passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 14, 2021, in Burlington ON. Dave was born in Shildon, England in 1950, moving to Canada in 1952. Dave was an entrepreneur and a pioneer in the Water Purification Industry, receiving the distinguished Service award from the Canadian Standards Association. As a community leader Dave was involved in many charities as well as the Burlington Lions Club. He was a mentor and friend to many. He will dearly be missed by his best friend and wife of 46 years Cathie Weatherill, his proud sons Adam (Steph) and Michael (Joanna) and his four wonderful Grandchildren. Following Dave’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place.
The CWQA family passes along its condolences to Mike Weatherill from Purolite and his family. Dave truly was a pioneer in the water industry in Canada.
