Member Spotlight: Andre Bélanger, Down East Clean Water
Andre Bélanger didn’t set out to work in the water industry, but once he found it, he knew he had found his place.
After leaving a construction project management role at a publicly owned company, Andre was introduced to the founder of Down East Clean Water through a mutual connection. With a lifelong fascination with how things work and a particular curiosity about water and its properties, the transition felt like a natural next step. Water filtration, he says, is a small but demanding industry, and that complexity was part of what drew him in.
Down East Clean Water has been serving clients for over 15 years, and Andre has been the owner and operator for the past three. His background spans hands-on trades and leadership roles: started working in a hardware store at age 14, becoming a Red Seal construction electrician, and later working as a seasoned construction project manager. Building, maintaining, and solving problems has always been a part of who he is.
That foundation shapes how Andre approaches his business today. At Down East Clean Water, quality and workmanship always come first. Andre is firm in his belief that selling a system to stay busy helps no one. He insists on using high-quality plumbing fittings and equipment, setting a high standard for every installation. For him, the measure of success isn’t volume, but trust, and the satisfaction of clients who know they’ve invested in something that will protect their health long-term.
One of Andre’s biggest concerns in the industry is the growing prevalence of untrained contractors installing UV systems or filtration equipment without a proper understanding of water quality, system design, or long-term maintenance. Not only does this undermine professional businesses, he says, but it can also put people’s health at risk. Education remains a major gap, whether for well owners or city residents. Andre is passionate about helping clients understand that “potable” doesn’t always mean optimal for long-term health.
Despite the challenges, Andre takes immense pride in his work. He speaks most fondly about his clients, the people who trust his recommendations, welcome him back year after year for maintenance, and greet him with smiles when he arrives at their door. Those moments, he says, make the late nights and long hours worth it.
Down East Clean Water has been connected to the Canadian Water Quality Association since 2013 and Andre became a member three years ago. Accountability is central to why CWQA matters to him. When it comes to water filtration, he believes professionals should stand behind what they sell, and being part of an organization that advocates for education, standards, and industry integrity is a privilege. Access to training and CWQA’s ongoing advocacy work are among the most valuable aspects of membership for him.
What Andre loves most about the water industry is that no two days are ever the same. Each project presents a new challenge, a new space, and a new design puzzle. He often tells clients that installing water systems feels like creating art. Above all, providing safe drinking water directly from the tap is deeply rewarding.
For anyone thinking about a career in the water industry, Andre offers clear advice:
-
Needs to be a people person.
-
Don’t sell anything you wouldn’t buy yourself.
-
Set your core values early.
-
Stick to those values.
Not every quote needs to close, and underselling yourself only leads to regret.
Looking ahead, Andre’s goals include continuing to grow Down East Clean Water while maintaining the level of service his clients expect. He’s working with a personal coach to strengthen his leadership skills and aims to double the company’s revenue in the coming year, without compromising quality or customer care.
Outside of work, Andre prioritizes balance. Weekends are rarely spent on the job unless there’s an emergency. Summers are for softball and golf; winters bring hockey, sledding, and time at his cottage up north. A typical workday starts with black coffee, a bit of admin, and preparing his van before heading out for installations, service calls, or sales visits. The day ends with follow-ups and on to the next adventure.
Through it all, Andre is motivated by a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to help people. He believes momentum is real, that effort compounds over time, and that what you do when no one is watching is what truly sets you apart.
