45 Years of Better Water: Inside Crystal Clear Water Centres
We recently sat down with Gary Eder and his son Alex Eder to talk about what drives Crystal Clear Water Centres, and why 45 years of loyalty from customers matters more than equipment ever could.
When you listen to Gary talk, you hear someone who isn’t selling equipment. He’s solving problems. For 45 years, Crystal Clear has served families and businesses across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph with water softeners, whole-home filtration, reverse osmosis drinking water systems, well water treatment and commercial solutions. But walk into their operation, and you won’t hear a corporate pitch. You’ll hear genuine problem-solving.
“We started with a simple idea,” Gary says, looking back at 1980. “Provide honest advice, quality products and exceptional service to local families. That hasn’t changed.”
Trust Is the Real Differentiator
Homeowners don’t think about water treatment every year. When they need help, they want someone they know will give them straight answers. Crystal Clear has built its reputation on looking after customers long after installation is complete. Service, maintenance, answering questions years later—they’re there. It shows in the numbers: more than 20,000 local customers, and many of them are second- and third-generation clients. “That’s very rewarding,” Gary notes. “You don’t get multi-generational customers without doing something right.”
Hard Water: The Region’s Real Problem
Waterloo Region has some of Ontario’s hardest water. Ask Alex, and he’ll tell you: hard water leaves spots on dishes, shortens appliance life, causes scale in plumbing, and makes cleaning much harder.
But the water quality conversation is evolving. Over the past five years, homeowners have asked about chlorine and chloramine in municipal water, forever chemicals like PFAS, drinking water quality, and complete water solutions instead of treating just one problem. This is where education matters. A lot.
Why Real Expertise Beats Online Research
People do plenty of research online these days. But not everything applies to their own water.
“Every water supply is different,” Alex explains. “Independent dealers can provide personalized advice based on actual water testing and years of experience in the local area. That’s something you can’t get from a web search.”
Alex also addresses a common misconception: that all water treatment systems are the same. They’re not. Two systems may look identical on the outside but perform very differently depending on what’s inside, how they’re sized, how they’re programmed and how they’re installed.
When Honest Advice Saves Thousands
One story stands out in Gary’s memory. A family had been struggling with water quality for years. They’d invested thousands of dollars in different systems from several companies, but nothing worked.
A loyal customer referred them to Crystal Clear. Rather than recommending they replace everything, Gary and his team did what they do best: thoroughly tested their raw water and evaluated how each piece of equipment was performing.
They discovered most of what the family had purchased could actually be part of the solution. With one additional treatment unit, changes to the equipment order, and a few adjustments, they resolved all of the water issues—at a fraction of what the family expected to spend.
“Seeing how relieved and grateful they were reminded us that our job isn’t to sell more equipment,” Gary says. “It’s to understand the customer’s water, provide honest advice, and recommend the solution that’s truly in their best interest.”
Evolution Without Losing Your Values
Technology has changed dramatically in 45 years. Today’s systems are more efficient, use less salt and water, and deliver better performance than anything available in 1980.
But something hasn’t changed: the need for education and expertise. In fact, it’s more important than ever. Consumers are more informed than before. They ask better questions. They want to understand exactly what they’re buying.
That has raised the bar for what it takes to be a trusted dealer. And Crystal Clear is ready.
Standing with CWQA
Crystal Clear has been a proud member of the Canadian Water Quality Association for many years. It’s a deliberate choice.
“We wanted to align ourselves with an organization that promotes education, ethical business practices and higher standards throughout the industry,” Gary says.
The payoff is real. The education and ongoing training CWQA provides are invaluable. The industry changes constantly—new technologies, new regulations, emerging contaminants. CWQA keeps dealers current so they can keep giving their customers the best possible advice.
For customers, that certification sends a message. It says: this team is committed to continuing education and following recognized industry standards. You’re dealing with qualified professionals, not just salespeople.
“CWQA certification gives homeowners confidence that the recommendations they’re receiving are based on knowledge and professionalism, not just sales,” Alex says.
Professionalism Matters Across an Industry
Water quality affects every Canadian. Regulations and standards continue to evolve. A national organization that works with governments, manufacturers, and dealers helps ensure decisions are based on sound science and practical experience.
That benefits both the industry and consumers who need honest, professional guidance.
“The stronger our industry is collectively, the better we serve Canadian homeowners,” Alex points out.
Water touches every part of daily life. When you improve someone’s water, you often improve what they deal with every day: protecting their home, making cleaning easier, and providing great-tasting drinking water.
It’s why Gary and the team show up every day. It’s rewarding knowing you’ve made a real difference.
That’s the foundation CWQA members are built on. Better water. Better living. Better industry.
