Definition

Water disinfection means the removal, deactivation or killing of pathogenic microorganisms. Microorganisms are destroyed or deactivated, resulting in termination of growth and reproduction. When microorganisms are not removed from drinking water, drinking water usage will cause people to fall ill.

CWQA’s position on disinfection

The CWQA position on water disinfection is the requirement for appropriate preconditioning and treatment of the source water to maximize the removal, deactivation or killing of pathogenic microorganisms.

How CWQA members can help

With the small, very small, micro and residential system sizes, CWQA members are the disinfection experts in designing, installing, managing and maintaining primary disinfection systems and the systems that pretreat or precondition the source water to ensure an effective program of maximum and most efficient disinfection of microorganisms.

What is CWQA doing about it?

CWQA offers certification courses in disinfection control and procedures. We do research into the efficacy of current technologies and we advocate for and help write policy to modernize disinfection protocols across Canada based on clear scientific evidence which drives sound policy and regulation.
